‘Welcome2Flatland’ is a cutting-edge Public Art Installation adapted from Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, the satirical novella by Edward A. Abbott, which was published in 1884. Initially adapted by TerryandTheCuz as a work in a contemporary dance, ‘Flatland: An Adaptation in Dance’ was a critical and commercial success, inspiring us to redevelop the work as a public art installation to make it more accessible to a wider audience.

Welcome2Flatland was first commissioned and staged at Urbanscapes, Malaysia’s premier creative arts and music festival in 2013.  It was then re-imagined and staged at Festival Belia Putrajaya from the 23rd to the 25th of May 2014 at the request of Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia before being reincarnated for the third time at the PUBLIKA Shopping Gallery as part of their Festive Season Exposition from the 10th to the 25th of December 2014.

This installation used the ideas and imagery of the novella to allegorically dissect the cultural makeup of contemporary society, and also explore the intersection of sensibilities and attitudes towards multiculturalism through the creative process, which fed into the creative outcome. The installation was a fully interactive multi-media and visual experience encompassing audio-visual design, visual art, architecture, interior, lighting and sound designs that was fun and stimulating for the whole family.

Welcome2Flatland saw us collaborating with a group of renowned artists from Malaysia, Australia and Germany. Our creative team included sound, visual and conceptual designer Rob Stewart, projection mapping artist Motio-Fixo, technical designer and programmer Kay Wengierek and architects Sukhjit Sidhu and Daniel Koshy.
